Entrance Number 2, Oriental Plaza

ABOUT

Fordsburg has it all - a long (and explosive) history, beautiful buildings, incredible food, and fabulous fabrics. There’s even an old public lavatory with links to the infamous Battle of Fordsburg during the 1922 Rand Revolt. This is where the South African Air Force first went into action – against their own people!

So, join your guides Alison Wilson, Marcelle Bosch and Andy Chinnah for an unforgettable walk through this dynamic hub as we follow the Blue Plaques through Fordsburg, bringing stories of this fabled neighbourhood to life.

We’ll walk past the Hamidia Mosque where Ghandi led 3000 supporters to burn their pass books, visit the Fordsburg Market, explore Indian sweetshops, and find out more about Solly’s Corner.

The walk ends back at the Oriental Plaza where you have parked your car. You then have the opportunity to visit the Plaza, buy your samosas, fabrics, etc, or return to visit some of the shops and places that we passed on our walk!

Please note: wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along sun protection and drinking water.
