Harold Le Roith - Encounter the Architect

Glen Ridge
ABOUT
This tour explores Glen Ridge and Summerhill, two adjoining apartment buildings designed by Harold Le Roith in Kentview, near Illovo.
Le Roith was a prominent South African architect and a key figure in the Modernist movement in South Africa. He is best known for introducing functionalism and the “international style” to Johannesburg’s urban landscape.
These buildings are both set within expansive landscaped grounds and feature consistent architectural themes, reflecting Le Roith’s commitment to light, space, and shared amenities. Your guides will be Kathy Munro and Di Levine.
In the second half of the tour Stephen Le Roith, the son of Harold, will chat to us about his father, his career and work. Stephen is a distinguished architect in his own right, with recognised works in Johannesburg and London. The architectural contributions of both Harold and Stephen are discussed in the Clive Chipkin books on Johannesburg.
The trustees of Summerhill have kindly offered to provide tea for the participants. We thank them for their generosity.
Don’t miss this unique encounter with a landmark SA architect!
