The Battle for Rand Steam & San Souci

Manaka Coffee Rand Steam
ABOUT
Early Johannesburg did not have services with very little water and no drainage. This together with the lack of personal washing machines resulted in the rise of a business opportunity.
Black and Indian men, mainly from Natal, would take in laundry and wash clothes in the local streams. Over time, one of these washing sites near Auckland Park, became an industrial laundry called Rand Steam.
Years later the property was sold to new owners and many of the original structures were sneakily demolished in defiance of legislation - and so a battle for heritage began!
Now, join us to hear the story of Rand Steam Laundries first hand from our founder and legendary heritage warrior, Flo Bird. It’s a tale of indignation and triumph as only Flo can relate.
Karen Curry will then take us for a wander over to the lovely old San Souci Hotel, once a popular picnic site and city escape, as well as Guild Cottage and McAuley House School.
The ticket price includes a cup of coffee at Manaka Coffee Shop at the start of the tour.
The total walking distance is about 2km. Please bring a sun hat, sun screen, good walking shoes, water and a snack if you want.
