WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE NIGHT

Events start promptly at 19:00. Please DM us via Instagram if you are running late. Doors are open from 18:30 for socialising. Doors will be closed at 19:050 sharp. We will be strict about this. Please have your tickets ready to be scanned on arrival.

45 minute performance, 15 minute interlude and 90 minute workshop and bum-drumming circle.

For the Workshop

We’ll begin with the safety brief and basics of impact play

Followed by grounding, breath work, and a few playful warm-ups to find our rhythm.

Then, we’ll form our Circle of Bums — a space for communal sound-making where participants can take turns giving and receiving gentle rhythmic taps and other aspects of musicality like humming as part of the living drum.

  • This is a partnered experience, we highly encourage you to bring a spanking partner or arrive prepared and comfortable to pair up with someone at the event. Solo drumming is obviously possible but it hits different
  • You choose your level of participation.
  • You can opt in or opt out at any time.
  • You can hum, tap, drum, or simply witness.

Everything unfolds slowly, consensually, and with humour. Expect sound, stillness, silliness, and moments of genuine, playful connection.

Embodiment Rope Space is a welcoming and safe(r) space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. We practice rope communally and host occasional workshops for upskilling the community. Rope is never safe, there are only ways to do it more safely.

Please study the FAQ and Ethos of our space on our website, www.embodimentropespace.co.za, before attending.

MORE ABOUT YOUR PERFORMERS

Bio

Sunga Konji is a pleasure advocate and educator who uses rope and body to facilitate

conversations around intimacy and sensual expression. With over 12 years of experience, his photography, workshops, performance work and rope sessions with private clients are centered around but not limited to the Black experience and the empowerment of Afro-descendants across the globe. His work began as a photo series on Instagram and has evolved into a healing practice around collective trauma within intimacy and sexuality on the continent.

Sunga Konji has contributed work to several audio, video and written publications including “A quirky quick guide to having great sex” and “We are fucking here”, books on sexuality and gender. He has also been a featured guest on numerous podcasts including The Spread Pod, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women, Sex with My Ex where he has spoken about rope, BDSM and sexuality and his embodiment of the masculine. Sunga Konji has been a panelist on several conferences including the Open Book Fair, Queer Rope and the South African Sexual Health Association (SASHA), invited to speak on some of his published work and his intimacy practice. In 2023 Sunga Konji was featured in two documentary series on sex, “Sex and Pleasure” and “The Habits of Gen-Z” on Showmax.

Rope has taken Sunga Konji from Cape Town, to Johannesburg, Durban, Harare, Nairobi, Lisbon, Amsterdam and Berlin and global virtual spaces, having been invited to facilitate intimacy workshops and showcase rope performance in all instances. In Cape Town, Sunga Konji regularly curates and facilitates rope performances and workshops respectively, to increase the visibility of BIPOC folks in the Intimate.

He uses rope as an extension of an internal process that seeks to foster joy and pleasure in others, working with people to uncouple physical intimacy from sex, rope from power, nudity from sexualisation (and the intersections herein) and ultimately encourage people to opt into this narratives and practices that are often presented as the default option that one opts out of. With this in mind, rope is simply a tool of expression and your rope practice if unintentional will simply reflect your internal being. It is not an end goal but rather a tool to access possibilities

RULES

1. Don’t be late.

2. Respect the space. Leave no trace - whatever you bring, take it back with you.

3. Ego has no place here. Learn and share with humility.

4. Ask for people’s pronouns and use the ones you are given.

5. No shoes. Keep underwear on at public events. Nipples may be free.

6. Do not make unsolicited comments about anyone else's body.

7. Do not take any photos of anyone in attendance without consent.

8. Do not post photos without the consent of EVERYONE in the photo.

9. Do not reveal the identity of anyone you meet in the space once you leave. Many people prefer anonymity.

10. Be mindful of making noise in the space when others are tying around you, this includes loud talking and laughing.

11. Be discrete when moving through other parts of the premises. Clothes are optional in the space but not outside the door.

12. Please stay home if you are feeling unwell.

13. Please do not use any recreational drugs before coming or while on site.

Since this is a performance evening, we have additional rules in place to ensure that the flow of the performances and the performers themselves are not disrupted. From 19:00 in addition to the above, please abide by the following:

1. Don't be late for performances. Be respectful to the performers

2. Be mindful of making noise in the space during performances, this includes loud talking and laughing. Take jokes outside.

3. Give performers space during the 15 minutes following the performance. After this, you may approach them to discuss the performance - unless stated otherwise on the night. Get their consent before engaging with them.

4. No photography of performances will be permitted other than by the designated event photographer.

FAQ

What is Shibari/Kinbaku/Bondage?

The art of binding the body of a consenting adult.

Is rope/Shibari always sexual?

Rope/Shibari has many benefits and practitioners outside of the sexual paradigm. For some, it is about pushing their bodies not unlike engaging in strenuous exercise or extreme sports. For others, it is a way to reclaim their agency after trauma. It can also be a way to experience a connection with others without the scripts and expectations associated with genital contact. As long as what you are doing is consensual and intentional, we consider it healthy and valid.

What should I wear?

This is a performance environment, not a sexual one, so crotches are to remain covered. Other than that, you are free to wear whatever you like. Comfy, sexy, sporty, fetish - as long as your booty is covered, you are welcome here.

Can I also tie at this event?

No:

For the first part of the evening, NO: Given that this is a performance space, the only rope that will be practiced will be by the performers themselves. We have rope for sale and you are welcome to approach our team if you are interested in learning as we have jams, classes, and workshops to accommodate this. This means NO tying will be allowed by audience members during the performance.

For the second part of the evening, NO: we will be having a spanking workshop

What should I expect on the night?

We hope to create a safe and intimate space where you will get the rare opportunity to experience rope by watching engaging performances. You will also have access to our team and the performers in the evening to chat about rope and connect with the community in a low-pressure environment.

Note on accessibility:

We believe rope is for every body. At the same time the building we are currently occupying does not allow for wheelchair access to ground floor ablution facilities. This is an ongoing negotiation with the current landlords. The space itself accommodates wheelchair access.
