Cumberland Nature Reserve Day Hike - The Kranz
Discover the stunning 560-hectare private Cumberland Nature Reserve, east of Pietermaritzburg! Explore pristine savanna, woodland, valley thickets, wetlands, deep gorges, waterfalls, and cliff faces – a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
Highlights you can expect:
- Over 300 bird species
- 50+ butterfly species
- 200+ wildflower species
- 30 species of mammals incl giraffes, zebras,etc
- Abundant indigenous trees & grasses
- Rietspruit Stream & Umgeni River – home to freshwater fish, crocs & water-loving creatures

Horseshoe Bend + The Gorge
appr. 13 km | ±5 hours
• Regular Hiker: Grade 2.5
• Casual Hiker: Grade 3.5

Important Notes:
-Cumberland is a private reserve, closed to day visitors. A special access code will be sent via WhatsApp prior to the event.
-Minimum 10 confirmed bookings required for the hike to go ahead. If the quota isn’t met, refunds will be processed.
-No credit or refund for ‘no shows’.

Grading of Hikes
Grade 1: Easy – minimal fitness required
Grade 2: Moderate – not too strenuous
Grade 3: Moderate – some fitness recommended
Grade 4: Strenuous – good fitness essential
Grade 5: Very strenuous – high fitness level required (we’re not going that far!)
