About Cumberland Nature Reserve
Cumberland is a 560-hectare private nature reserve just east of Pietermaritzburg, offering an incredible mix of savanna, woodland, wetlands, deep valleys, cliffs, waterfalls, and wooded gorges.
Perfect for nature lovers and landscape photographers
The reserve is rich in wildlife, including:
-300+ bird species
-50+ butterfly species
-200+ wildflower species
-30 mammal species
-Abundant indigenous trees & grasses
-A healthy snake population, including African Rock Pythons

• Day Visitors: R299 pp per day hike
• Overnight (1 night / 2 days): R999 pp

Saturday – The Kranz
6–7 km | ±3 hours
• Regular Hiker: Grade 1
• Casual Hiker: Grade 2
Saturday Night – Night Hike
Scorpion hunt!
(Overnight guests only – details shared closer to the event)
Sunday – Horseshoe Bend +The Gorge
Not suitable for beginners
appr. 13 km | ±5 hours
• Regular Hiker: Grade 2.5
• Casual Hiker: Grade 3.5
What to Bring
For hiking:
Water, snacks, cap, backpack, comfy hiking shoes/boots, phone or camera
Hiking stick highly recommended for the gorge hike
• Bring your own OR Buy from us: R299 (order in advance)
For camping:
Your own tent, sleeping gear, lights, food & drinks
Gear Rental Available
• 2-Man Tent: R300 (weekend)
• 4-Man Tent: R450 (weekend)
• Sleeping Bag + Mat: R150 pp
Important Notes
• Day visitors welcome (cost: R299pp per day hike)
• Non-electrified campsite (no electricity)
• Running water available (not for drinking – bring your own)
• Self-catering units available for non-campers – contact us for info
• Minimum 6 confirmed bookings required
• Event runs rain or shine (extreme weather excepted)
• No refunds or credits for no-shows

Grading of Hikes
Grade 1: Easy – minimal fitness required
Grade 2: Moderate – not too strenuous
Grade 3: Moderate – some fitness recommended
Grade 4: Strenuous – good fitness essential
Grade 5: Very strenuous – high fitness level required (we’re not going that far!)
