BAND BIOS
THE PORCHLIGHTS ULTRA-LIGHT
The Porchlights have been haunting bars, lurking in markets, and occasionally crashing festivals for close to a decade. Think Dolly Parton after a whiskey bender, Jolie Holland with a secret vendetta, and yes, even some Bright Eyes — because who doesn’t love a little existential dread with their acoustic tunes?
Pulled straight from a box of wood and wire, The Porchlights hit like a shot of moonshine: smooth, raw, and a little dangerous.
For The Big Jingle & Jam, they’ll be playing as ‘The Porchlights Ultra-Light’; a pared down ensemble featuring Glen Wolter on vocals, guitar and harmonica, spinning tales with his ruggedly soulful voice; and Daniel Zachariah Franks on double bass, keeping it all smooth and steady.
DAX BUTLER & THE FABULOUS RESENTMENTS
One of South Africa’s true originals, Dax Butler delivers swamp blues and alt-country with grit, soul and irrepressible charm. A veteran songwriter and former frontman of The Other Band and Rinderpest, Dax manifests lyrics with the bite of Dylan, the grit of Waits and the soul of Cohen.
For The Big Jingle & Jam, Dax will be joined by Daniel Zachariah Franks on strings and Simon Annett on percussion. Together, they craft a live sound for music lovers who crave truth, texture and talent — peppered with just enough mischief to keep you grinning and them toes tapping.
WAS DAAR
Was Daar serves up world-flavoured folk with a side of soul, designed to amplify renowned author and songwriter Rian Malan’s original English and Afrikaans songs. Expect lyrics that weave intricate tales and burrow deep under your skin, lingering long after the last note.
Rian — founder of legendary Radio Kalahari Orkes — leads the charge on guitar and vocals, flanked by Guy Tillim on guitar and vocals and Hannah Loewenthal on violin. Their performance is curated for audiences who listen, but if the mood calls for a bietjie opskop they’ll happily oblige.
NICK TURNER & THE BIG GUNS
Nick Turner, formerly of Sons of Trout and Mikanic, has shared stages from Cape Town to New York City with legends like Bakithi Kumalo and Zolani Mahola. His music spans rock, reggae, afro-pop, ghoema, hip-hop and jazz with effortless flair, and he’s renowned for crafting songs that are lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous and energetic.
Now back home and on a solo mission, Nick’s teamed up with some of the “big guns” of SA music — Schalk Joubert (bass), Jonny Blundell (guitar) and Carlo Fabe (drums) — to deliver a live experience packed with lyrical punch; one that’s as musically masterful as it is wildly witty.
