Founder of African Enterprise, Dr. Cassidy has spent decades proclaiming the Gospel across Africa while championing justice, reconciliation, and unity during some of South Africa’s most critical moments in history. His voice has carried hope in times of division and truth in seasons of uncertainty.
During the years of Apartheid, he played an important behind-the-scenes role in peacebuilding and national reconciliation, helping South Africa move toward its first democratic elections in 1994.
Internationally respected as an evangelist, author, teacher, and statesman of faith, Dr. Cassidy has been honoured globally for his contribution to Christian leadership, including serving as Honorary Chairman of the Lausanne Movement, succeeding John Stott.

Dr Michael Cassidy - Biography
Dr. Michael Cassidy is widely recognised as one of Africa’s most influential Christian leaders,
whose life and ministry continue to leave a lasting impact across the continent. An evangelist,
preacher, teacher, author, and founder of African Enterprise, he has devoted his life to spreading
the Gospel while promoting justice, reconciliation, and unity during some of South Africa’s most
difficult years.
He studied at University of Cambridge, where he earned a Master’s degree in Modern and
Medieval Languages, later completing a Bachelor of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary. He
also received an honorary doctorate from Azusa Pacific University. In 2012, he was appointed
Honorary Co-Chairman of the Lausanne Movement and named Distinguished Alumnus of Fuller
Seminary.
Cassidy’s life changed dramatically in 1955 while studying at Cambridge, when he experienced a
personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Two years later, he felt called to evangelise the cities of
Africa and gave up a promising teaching career to enter full-time ministry.
In 1961, he founded African Enterprise in South Africa, which later expanded into eleven other
African countries. He became known not only for evangelistic outreach, but also for his strong
commitment to social justice, racial reconciliation, and Christian unity.
Over the years, Michael Cassidy has helped organise some of the largest interdenominational
Christian gatherings in Africa, including the South African Congress on Mission and Evangelism in
Durban in 1973, the Pan African Christian Leadership Assembly in Nairobi, and the South African
Christian Leadership Assembly, which drew thousands of church leaders and believers.
During the height of Apartheid, he courageously challenged injustice and played an important
role in promoting peace and reconciliation. As South Africa stood close to civil war, he helped
facilitate dialogue that contributed to the country’s peaceful transition to democracy and its first
democratic elections in 1994.
He has also championed Christian family life, leading the Marriage Alliance of South Africa and
becoming involved in the international Promise Keepers movement. In 1997, he addressed
massive gatherings in the United States, speaking to tens of thousands of men.
Despite decades of public leadership, Michael Cassidy remains devoted to his family. He and his
wife, Carol, are settled in Hilton, where they raised their three children and later enjoy eight
grandchildren.
Even in later years, Cassidy continues writing, preaching, and sharing his faith whenever his health
allows. His legacy is one of faith, courage, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to
transforming lives across Africa.
