Silent Movie Organ Improvisation
Tue Jan 27, 19:30 - Tue Jan 27, 21:15
St George's Anglican Church
ABOUT
Renowned composer-organist Franz Danksagmüller, celebrated for his fusion of century-old instruments with cutting-edge live-electronics, will create a live, improvised soundtrack to a silent film, 'Phantom of the Opera', American silent film by Rupert Julian, 1925 - entirely in the moment. He draws not only on his fascination with historic instruments, in this case the organ, but also embraces the most modern tools of sound-design.
This is more than a film-concert: it’s a live dialogue between image and sound, between the silent era’s expressive power and the cutting-edge creativity of our own time. Perfect for curious minds, film-lovers, and anyone eager to witness the unpredictable spark of real-time composition.
This concert is a part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival 2026 - a yearly celebration of one of the greatest composers in the Western Classical oeuvre which is dedicated to the upliftment and education of classical music in Johannesburg, and South Africa as a whole.
