BLK JKS, South Africa’s iconic avant-rock pioneers, return to Untitled Basement for an intimate Storytellers Series event. Known for their groundbreaking debut After Robots (2009), the band spent years crafting their long-awaited second album Abantu/BeforeHumans (2021), a genre-bending fusion of Afrocentric rock, desert blues, dub, funk, jazz and avant-garde sonic experimentation.
Internationally acclaimed — Rolling Stone called them “Africa’s best new band”; they’ve appeared on Fader’s cover and earned praise from Dave Grohl — BLK JKS create music that functions as a living sonic archive. Their performances weave folklore, punk, kwaito influences, celestial guitars and transcendental drums into a ritual-like experience.
This Untitled Basement show will feature a special guest and an intimate conversation-performance format where BLK JKS share the stories, influences and creative revelations behind their evolution, their collaborations with artists like Vieux Farka Touré, Money Mark, Madala Kunene and Morena Leraba, and the making of Abantu/BeforeHumans.
