ABOUT
PJ Powers – Singing Through The Shadows
In ‘Singing Through The Shadows,’ PJ Powers invites you to join her as she recounts her
remarkable life story through a compelling blend of music, wit, and heartfelt reflection. This
autobiographical performance traces her journey from her upbringing in KZN, as just a little girl
who wanted to be a ‘famous singer’ to the iconic PJ Powers that she is today.
With humour and honesty, PJ recounts her short-lived and ‘hapless’ time with the all-girl band
Pantha, to becoming the lead singer of Hotline, with whom on a momentous day in 1983, played
at the Jabulani Amphitheatre in Soweto, where the crowd named her ‘Thandeka’. After
embarking on a solo career, PJ achieved unprecedented success, crossing racial divides and
captivating audiences around Africa and Europe.
Through her candid storytelling, PJ shares intimate stories that reveal her vulnerabilities, her
struggles, and her triumphs, sprinkled with her gift for telling anecdotes and the gift of her voice.
She reflects on the profound advice given to her by Nelson Mandela, who encouraged her, whilst still in prison, to harness her music as a powerful tool for communication.
As she performs her anthemic songs that resonate deeply with her audience, PJ creates an
unforgettable atmosphere of shared experience and connection. ‘Singing Through The Shadows’ is not just a concert; it’s a transformative journey through the life of a woman whose voice has become an integral part of South Africa’s history. PJ brings this show from sellout performances in the UK, summer 2025 to South Africa for the first time. Don’t miss her in this once in a lifetime show that celebrates resilience, passion, and the unifying power of music.
