ABOUT

The Simon's Town Museum is pleased to announce that we will be hosting 'Abrahams Promises' - A STAGED READING OF A SCRIPTED DIALOGUE BY MIKE VAN GRAAN.

'The creation of Israel as a Jewish homeland after the holocaust in which Germany slaughtered 6 million Jews is one of the most polarising subjects in the world today. Particularly after more than two years in which the world has witnessed the devastation of Gaza and the killing of tens of thousands of civilians - mostly women and children - as Israel has responded to the attack by Hamas and its allies on 7 October 2023, it is appropriate then to ask ‘Are Jews really safer today than they were on 6 October 2023? What about the rise of Islamophobia as witnessed in the responses to the election of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York? What is the role of Christian Zionism in all of this?’

These questions are at the centre of this scripted dialogue where representatives of the Abrahamic faiths – Islam, Judaism and Christianity – engage these questions and related themes. While the hostilities are not essentially religious, religion plays an important role in how many seek to frame and justify it. The form of the presentation is a scripted panel discussion in a television studio (note: it not a play in the traditional sense) and it will be done as a staged reading with the five readers having scripts in hand. The reading will be followed by a discussion between the audience and the cast.'
