The Rockskandi Kings. Three creative souls. Three individuals with a message. Three men in tune with their instruments. Three joyfully rebellious lyricists. Three groove merchants.
A trio of musicians with a great love and respect for each other and the music. Josh (Freshlyground, The Streaks, Slaves to the Rhythm), Guy (Mean Black Mamba, ex-Hot Water, Gerald Clark) and Lumanyano (Azania Band, Nomadic Orchestra, King Kong) have known each other personally for some years now and played with one another but never in this configuration. The music stems from a fusion of Maskandi and Rock ‘n Roll but also elements of Roots Reggae, Funk, Blues, West & Central African music and more.
Maskandi is an Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa, Pondo, Ndebele, etc.) traditional form of music. The idea has brewed in a three legged pot for some time now and from the first time these 3 individuals stepped into a rehearsal room together, it was obvious that something magical was happening. All three have a deep interest in maskandi and together share an ability to improvise on the spot. Their songs are songs of protest, freedom and hope. The Rockskandi Kings.
