ABOUT

The Scullery Quintet

The Scullery Quintet is a genre-bending South African ensemble that stirs up classical precision with a hearty dash of jazz, African groove, and pop sparkle. Born in 2020 (yes, the year everyone learned to bake bread), the group came together to keep their music alive, and ended up cooking up something completely new.

Their recipe? A string quartet with a twist: two violins (Waldo Luc Alexander and Hana Yim-Wahl), a viola (Tiisetso Mashishi), a double bass instead of a cello (Viwe Mkizwana keeping it deep), and drummer Peter Auret—three-time SAMA winner and the group’s resident rhythmic chef.

From Bach to bossa nova, Jobim to jazz, they play it all with flair, finesse, and just enough mischief to make audiences grin. Whether at Woordfees, Wakkerstroom, or Atterbury Klassiek, The Scullery Quintet proves that great music doesn’t need to take itself too seriously; it just needs to groove.
