Piano Recital Pieter Jacobs, Wednesday 22 October, 19h Welgemeend Concert Series
In a rare Cape Town appearance the acclaimed Pretoria-based pianist Pieter Jacobs presents a concert programm focused solely on the genre of Piano Ballades featuring compositions by Brahms, Liszt, Debussy and Chopin
The term ballade in the late 18th century referred to German poetry that told a story, and that often was folk-like in nature. Sometimes, this poetry was set to music. In the 19th century, the term assumed an extended meaning: it now also included instrumental music with a narrative predisposition. In some cases, there could be clear literary connotations – for example, the first of the Ballades, Op 10 by Brahms is based on the old Scottish poem 'Edward'. Some of the most important piano music of the 19th century turned out to be ballades, including the four ballades by Chopin, composed between 1831 and 1842.
As always the concert ticket includes a glass of wine courtesy of Jacob's Vineyards, which may be enjoyed in the beautiful Welgemeend premises from 18h onwards.
