Lebo's Soweto Walking Tour

Sat Sep 27, 14:00 - Sat Sep 27, 16:00

Lebo's Soweto Backpackers

ABOUT

The walking tour begins at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers, a community tourism hub and social enterprise founded by tourism pioneer Lebo Malepa. After a warm welcome, we head toward a panoramic lookout point where the guide highlights key landmarks and shares the rich history of Soweto. Along the way, you'll witness various initiatives of community development and upliftment, such as the greening and cleaning of our open spaces. A stop at the historic Mzimhlophe men’s hostel offers insight into the lives of former mineworkers and the legacy of migrant labour, as well as understanding under what conditions people live here today.

You will explore the vibrant streets, enjoy local snacks from street vendors and take in Soweto’s dynamic urban culture, including colourful street art and graffiti. The walk continues through Meadowlands, a neighbourhood shaped by forced removals during apartheid, where you’ll experience the community’s resilience and energy. The tour concludes back at Lebo’s with a taste of our home-brewed traditional drinks – Umqhombothi (sorghum beer) and Gemmer (ginger drink).

As an optional extra, you can choose to enjoy our delicious Potjie lunch served in the greenery of our Outdoor Restaurant and community park.
