Sat Sep 27, 14:30 - Sat Sep 27, 16:30

Sophiatown Heritage Centre

ABOUT

Step into the vibrant history of Sophiatown with this immersive cultural tour that brings the past to life through heritage, storytelling, and performance. Along the way, you’ll visit iconic sites such as Christ the King Church, one of the few buildings that survived the forced removals, where the ashes of Father Trevor Huddleston rest. At the Yard—once the famous Odin Cinema—you’ll relive the golden days when the venue hosted ANC meetings, live performances, and community gatherings. Through stories, acting, and song, the tour recreates the spirit of a place once brimming with resilience and creativity.

A highlight of the experience is meeting Ma Elizabeth Nobethane, a victim and eyewitness of apartheid’s forced removals, who shares her personal story of survival and strength. Visitors will also have the chance to try their hands at local crafts before the journey culminates in the spirited Eyitha dance—a unique performance created from the very stories of Sophiatown. More than just a tour, this is an opportunity to sing, dance, and step directly into the lived history of a community that refused to be silenced.
