Made during the height of the German Expressionist cinema era (alongside classics like The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu, also performed in the past), this amazing piece of cinematic history from 1920 will be rescored and performed for the first time by The Makabra Ensemble on Saturday November 1st, one show only at the Horrorfest.

This will be the 15th film re-scored by The Makabra Ensemble with a new original soundtrack - performed at the HORRORFEST's Labia Theatre home, featuring two very special returning guests, Sara Eksteen and Maxim Starcke.

2025 is the 21st edition of the South African HORRORFEST Film Festival & Halloween event running across 29 October - 9 November, with new and classic movies, short films you're unlikely to see anywhere else, Bloody Parchment literature night, Halloween dress-up and more.

More classics will include:

a special 16mm film projection of the 1931 FRANKENSTEIN: Get Tickets Here

and the 50th anniversary screening of the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: Get Tickets Here

Viewers are encouraged to dress up in whatever their choice of Halloween garb, with prizes for our favourites.

The Makabra Ensemble was created in 2006 by Sonja Ruppersberg (Terminatryx, Isobel), Paul Blom (Terminatryx, V.O.D, F8), Sean Ou Tim (Lark, Mr Sakitumi, Battery 9, Jeremy Loops, The Kiffness), Matthijs van Dijk (The ShhArt Ensemble, Dawntreader), Simon Ratcliffe (Lark), and was later joined by Ronnie Belcher (Terminatryx, The Damned Crows, Gramlich). Across the years special guests have joined some of the performances including Grimehouse, Charles East, Francois Blom, The Crackpot Realist and more, including 2025 returning guests Sara Eksteen and Maxim Starcke.

With 14 feature films and a short (Frankenstein) silent film adaptations, some of the movies The Makabra Ensemble re-scored since 2006 include Nosferatu, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, The Phantom Of The Opera, Metropolis, Haxan, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Vampyr, Faust, The Phantom Carriage, The Fall Of The House Of Usher, Dante's Inferno and more.
