Old Nectar Concerts welcomes a rising star in South African classical music, Isaac van der Merwe, for a solo piano recital at Old Nectar gardens historic wine cellar in Jonkershoek.


Join us for an afternoon of virtuosity and musical depth as young pianist Isaac van der Merwe takes to the stage for a captivating solo recital. South African pianist Isaac van der Merwe is a laureate of many South African competitions. He won the 2024 Human Naudé Music Scholarship Competition and was awarded Second Prize (Classical) at the 2023 UNISA National Piano Competition. In 2022, he took first place at both the Hennie Joubert and Atterbury Piano Competitions and has received top prizes in the Johann Vos and Pieter Kooij Music Competitions. Known for his sensitivity, technical brilliance, and commanding presence, Isaac is fast emerging as one of South Africa’s most exciting new talents with a programme that promises both passion and poise. His programme for this solo recital concert includes Bach’s monumental Chaconne (in the Busoni transcription), Beethoven’s late Sonata Op. 109, and Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli, alongside his own composition, Impromptu and Chaconne in C minor.


The concert on Sunday 5 October 2025 starts at 4pm and will last approximately 2 hours. Tickets are R200 per person and include selected wines from Banhoek’s renowned Oldenburg Wine Estate and finger food at interval. Student / learner tickets are offered at R50 per concert at the door. Guests are invited to come early or stay after the concert to enjoy the tranquility of the Old Nectar gardens.
