James and Ethel Gray Park - Dog Walker’s Paradise
Sat Oct 11, 15:00 - Sat Oct 11, 17:30
James & Ethel Gray Park
ABOUT
Originally established as the Birdhaven Plantation, James and Ethel Gray Park is one of Joburg’s most beautiful green spaces. This 32 hectare oasis, named after a former Mayor and his wife, is popular with walkers, cyclists, runners, and Joburgers from all walks of life looking for a break from the concrete jungle.
So, join your guide David Fleminger for a stroll around the park and - in a JHF first - your dogs are welcome to join!
Along the way, we’ll hear about the evolution from plantation to park: first as a result of the Melrose Arch development and then thanks to the work of the James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation, which has done much good work upgrading the park in recent years.
We’ll also uncover the grisly story of Bubbles Schroder, a ‘good time girl’ who was found murdered in the park back in the 1940s. And we’ll recount the unfortunate stories of Brett Kebble and Hazel Crane, two controversial characters who were killed close by.
The trail will include a walk along the bird sanctuary and dam. And after the walk, we’ll head over to the attractive new JEGP Padel and Social Club to grab a drink and a snack (for your own account).
Please note: the route will be around 3 kilometers and includes some inclines. A reasonable degree of fitness and mobility is necessary. Wear good walking shoes and sun protection. If you are going to bring along your dogs, please ensure they are well socialised and are accustomed to walking in public spaces. We ask that all dogs are brought into the park on leashes and we will accept no liability for bad behaviour (canine or otherwise!).
