Babalwa Mentjies is a versatile jazz vocalist and accomplished songwriter originating from Makhanda, Eastern Cape, and presently based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, complemented by a postgraduate qualification in Marketing Management. In addition to her performance career, Ms. Mentjies is a dedicated vocal coach and music educator.

She serves as a Project Manager at the Institute for Music and Indigenous Arts Development (IMAD) and is a co-founder of Amathunzi Arts & Development Centre, an organization committed to leveraging the arts to address social issues. Recognized for her impactful contributions, she was honored as an Influential Woman of the Year in 2024.

Ms. Mentjies performs alongside leading South African jazz artists, captivating audiences both locally and internationally through her soulful voice and compelling stage presence.
