ABOUT
Kanu Ntshoko is a South African jazz drummer and composer known for his deep rhythmic charged style. His music is rooted in South African jazz traditions, modal jazz,African folk rhythms, free jazz and rich improvisational elements. Normans raised in Rondebosch and Langa, Cape Town, Ntshoko comes from a strong musical lineage - his grandfather, Makaya Ntshoko, was a renowned jazz drummer who passed on his sticks as a baton to Kanu, a gesture that symbolizes both legacy and inspiration. His playing is recognised for its emotional depth and rhythmic complexity, often described as spiritual intense rather then merely technical. Kanu embraces the weight of his name with pride, viewing it as both an honor and a responsibility, especially in light of comparisons to his grandfather by musician such as Louis Moholo-Moholo and more.
Through his journey, he has been mentored by and collaborated with some of South Africa's distinguished jazz icons, including Dr. Tete Mbambisa, Victor Ntoni, Dorothy Masuka, Abigail Khubeka, Ezra & Duke Ngcukane, Cat Stevens (USA), Louis Moholo, Ernest Dawkins (USA) Hilton Schilder, among others. Kanu has been performing regularly with his ensemble Kanu Ntshoko SPIRIT REJOICE. Audiences and fellow musicians often describe his performances as transformative and liberating, this uplifting band features Adam Powell, Adam Selikowitz, Katy Racionzer, Carli Morkel, Christin Chandler and Daniel Roux .
