Whitmore’s role in bringing Hawaiian Aloha and California beach culture to African shores, and his impact on a generation of surfers at Muizenberg is the subject of Masterson's new biography: The Oom.

Masterson has spent a lifetime in the surf industry and corporate communications. He has worked in print and digital media for more than 30 years, chiefly as an editor and journalist, but also as a publisher, photographer, content marketer, author and most recently as Communications Manager for an environmental NPO, Protect the West Coast.
