ABOUT
Futuristic, Feminist Fun with Shakespeare's Classic Comedy
Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, believed to be his second play written around 1591, has long sparked debate among historians, scholars, and directors for its portrayal of gender dynamics—particularly its treatment of female obedience and male authority. In a provocative new production, director Barbara Basel reimagines the play for the 21st century and beyond, offering a bold reinterpretation set in a future society where traditional gender roles have been dramatically reversed.
In this unique staging, the power dynamics are flipped: women now hold social and economic dominance, while men wait to be selected for marriage—often by the woman with the largest bank account. The lead characters have been gender-swapped to explore issues of agency, autonomy, and societal expectation in a world that mirrors many of today’s gender inequalities, only with the roles reversed. Most of the servant roles however, remain male, offering further commentary on lingering class and gender dynamics.
“I’ve chosen to retain the comedic heart of the original play,” says Barbara. “We often absorb complex truths more deeply when we’re laughing than when we’re being preached at. By using humour, we invite audiences to reflect on deeply rooted gender norms without defensiveness.”
The production also serves as a tribute: “I dedicate this work to all women whose rights have been stripped and intelligence undermined by systemic gender prejudice—especially those currently living under oppressive regimes, such as in Afghanistan,” adds Barbara.
While Shakespeare would go on to write many complex, strong female characters—Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra, Portia, and others—The Taming of the Shrew continues to challenge directors to confront its gender politics head-on. This production does just that, with imagination, courage, and biting wit.
