ONLINE LAUNCH & CELEBRATION "Parenting Psychoanalysed: Letters to a Parent"

On behalf of the South African Psychoanalytical Association, we invite you to join us at an exciting one-off online event: the launch of the new book, “Parenting Psychoanalysed: Letters to a Parent,” published in May 2025 by Routledge and edited by Andy Cohen, with contributions from 39 psychoanalysts from around the world.

The launch will be celebrated in the form of an online Zoom discussion with: Contributors to the book Sérgio Nick and Ntshediseng Tlooko, Editor of the book Andy Cohen and Psychoanalyst and Chair of the IPA in Culture committee (2017-2025) Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau, and will be facilitated by host and producer of the IPA’s podcast On and Off the Couch Harvey Schwartz.

It will be wonderful to have international friends, colleagues and fellow parents gather with us to listen to what promises to be a fascinating discussion about an important and timely publication. This is an event for those in and beyond the field!

SHORT BIOS:

Andy Cohen is an artist, author and senior candidate psychoanalyst with the South African Psychoanalytical Association. She is passionate about making psychoanalytic ideas more accessible. She holds an MA in Fine Art and trained as a community art counsellor at Lefika La Phodiso.

Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau is a training and supervising analyst and on the Faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute as well as of the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society. Her area of expertise is metapsychology, in particular drive theory. She has published numerous papers, three books on theoretical and clinical psychoanalysis and two novels.

Harvey Schwartz MD is a training and supervising analyst at The Psychoanalytic Association of New York and the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. He is the host of the IPA podcast Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch.

Ntshediseng Tlooko is a clinical psychologist as well as a senior candidate psychoanalyst with the South African Psychoanalytical Association. She was an organising committee member for the SAPI/SAPA Conferences for six years and also worked at the Johannesburg Metro Clinics for seven years.

Sérgio Eduardo Nick is a medical doctor, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, child and adolescent psychoanalyst. He is the former IPA vice president (2017–2021), Latin American board member and Executive Committee representative (2023–2025). Sérgio is a member of the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of Rio de Janeiro / IPA.
