Vukuhambe

Vukuhambe jazz band biography . Vukuhambe (“Wake up and go do

it yourself!” in isiXhosa), fosters a combination of young and old jazz

enthusiasts and is a sixth set band consisting of a vocalist, drummer,

bassist, pianist, saxophonist. The band was formed through jam

sessions in the township we then got together then formed the band

Vukuhambe jazz band we then started to do few gigs small and big as

a family of love for music. Hailing from Gugulethu, the band was

formed in 2011 by Athenkosi Artee Sokuyeka “Artee De Drummer” and

with the help of his father(Manager). The other members are;

Mpumelelo Saxophonists, Bones on Piano, KG the Bassist and also

Poppie the vocalist.

Our sound is made up of jazz, African jazz vibes, African fusion as

well as some of our own compositions.Cover versions of artists

such as the likes of Hugh Masekela,Jonas Ngwanga,Winston

Mankunku, Sibongile Khumalo, Letha Mbuli, and the queen

Miriam Makeba herself inspired us.We do international jazz as

well Vukuhambe has performed at various locations in Cape

Town such as Piano Bar, The Great Wizoo, the ever so missed

Tagore’s,drawing room,Mojo Market,Herringtons,Café Roux and

other venues based in their township the band also do
