ABOUT
This is an art and music pairing that will heighten appreciation of the artworks in the Motherhood: Paradox and Duality exhibition, curated by Andrea Lewis. Lewis will be in conversation with some of the artists whose works are featured. A performance by the choral group Amici de Lumine will follow this. Ticket price includes entry to the gallery and access to all the exhibitions at the South African National Gallery.
In an era of political instability, economic hardship, and global crises, the act of mothering -whether biological, chosen, or communal – has never been more critical or radical. This exhibition invites audiences to see caregiving as an act of resilience, love as a form of labour, and mothering as a political force that shapes and sustains societies.
Amici de Lumine was established in 2010 by Maestro Michaelangelo Cloete in his final post-graduate year at the South African College of Music, The long-standing choir embraces members from all walks of life. From inception, the focus has been on rehearsing and performing sacred choral music with an emphasis on debuting the works of young composers, often from SACM’s composition department. Emulating Amici de Lumine, Italian for Friends of the Light, he and his choir strive to bring light to all through the experience of their performances.
