It is a late September morning in the farmlands of Tulbagh. The van Wyks’ stoep is wrapped in Cynthia’s prayers. Wilhelm is watering the flower bed when Cynthia arrives home from church. A milk tart and a few cups of tea are not just a habit, they are mandatory. This quiet, soulful Sunday is interrupted by Joan, the frustratingly good-hearted and slightly flirtatious neighbour, who ventures to get her dose of Wilhelm. “Here, dankie vir ’n nuwe môre. Gee vir ons goedheid, guns – en geduld. Amen.”
