Roedean Senior School
ABOUT
Best known for the Union Buildings in Pretoria, several ‘Randlord’ mansions in Parktown, and the Secretariat Buildings and Parliament House in New Delhi, Sir Herbert Baker’s work shaped the civic and ceremonial landscapes of South Africa, Britain, and India.
Now, join Prof. Kathy Munro for a compelling ‘Heritage Talk’ that takes us on an international journey through the life and legacy of this visionary architect of empire, identity, and memory.
This illustrated talk explores Baker’s architectural philosophy, domestic architecture, landmark projects, key collaborators, and enduring influence. From Groote Schuur and Rhodes Memorial to his fraught partnership with Sir Edwin Lutyens in New Delhi, discover how Baker blended classical ideals with local traditions to craft a distinctive architectural language — both celebrated and contested to this day.
The talk will take place in the auditorium at Roedean School. Tea and coffee are included in the price. Copies of the new biography of Sir Herbert Baker by John Stewart will be on sale at the special price of R320.
