Clinic Overview

The Learn to Sail Optimist Clinic at HYC is designed to introduce young sailors (ages 8–12) to the fundamentals of sailing in a fun, safe, and engaging environment.

The program ensures skill development across all weather conditions—light, medium, and strong wind—while keeping sailors motivated through games and confidence-building activities.

Core Objectives

• Develop basic understanding of sailing theory — wind, balance, and sail trim.

• Build confidence and independence in rigging, launching, and steering.

• Introduce essential Optimist skills — tacking, gybing concept, trimming, and boat balance.

• Encourage teamwork, seamanship, and safety awareness.

• Create a fun, engaging, and supportive learning atmosphere.
