Woza Albert! On Stage in the Garden Route

This August, the Garden Route will resonate with the echoes of South Africa’s rich theatrical heritage as Woza Albert! takes centre stage in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. Presented by Ndlondlo Productions in partnership with DALRO, this powerful revival features acclaimed actors Hamilton Dhlamini and Thulani Mtsweni, under the direction of Dhlamini himself.

A seminal piece of anti-apartheid theatre, Woza Albert! is a sharp, satirical imagining of the second coming of Jesus Christ (Morena) during apartheid-era South Africa. Through a series of moving and humorous vignettes, the play lays bare the absurdities and brutalities of the apartheid regime. Originally created in 1981 by Percy Mtwa, Mbongeni Ngema, and Barney Simon, it has earned global acclaim and remains a cornerstone of South African theatre.
