Join author Dr Adrian Perkel and guest speaker Prof. Mark Solms for the launch of: "Neuroscience and the Death Drive: The Nature of Symptoms, from Formulation to Treatment."


About the Presenters:

Dr Adrian Perkel is a clinical psychologist and former Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of the Western Cape. For more than 35 years, he has combined psychoanalytic theory, writing, and clinical practice. He belongs to both the South African Psychoanalytic Confederation and the South African Psychoanalytic Initiative (SAPI) Psychotherapy College, and he co-founded the Association of Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (ACPP). Dr Perkel serves on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Practice and the International Advisory Board of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis. His current research explores how aggressive drives shape symptoms and couple conflict. Routledge published his latest book, Unlocking the Nature of Human Aggression: A Psychoanalytic and Neuroscientific Approach, in 2023.


Prof Mark Solms is internationally recognised for identifying the brain mechanisms of dreaming and for integrating neuroscience with psychoanalytic theory. He is Professor of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town, Lecturer in Neurosurgery at St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine, and Director of the Neuropsychoanalysis Centre at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. His extensive writings - translated into 13 languages - span dreaming, consciousness, and the Revised Ed. of Sigmund Freud's Complete Works. In 2000, the American Psychiatric Association named him International Psychiatrist of the Year. Most recently, he received the International Psychoanalytical Association's Award for Extraordinarily Meritorious Service - warmest congratulations on this honour!!
