ABOUT

Peter Ndlala is a celebrated South African musician, born in Rondebosch in 1973. Renowned for his versatility as a bassist, soprano saxophonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader, Ndlala is recognized for his innovative approach—his bass guitar often takes on a lead role, blending powerful and sensitive tones that captivate audiences. His musical journey began at M.A.P.P. (Music, Action for People’s Progress), where he honed his craft and performed at the Guinness Jazz Festival in 1992. Mentored by South African jazz legend Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Ndlala developed a unique style that fuses Afro music with jazz fusion and improvisation.

Throughout his career, Ndlala has collaborated with a diverse range of local and international artists, including Winston Mankunku Ngozi, George Werner, Judith Sephuma, Rashaan Patterson, and many others. He is active as a session musician and previously hosted a popular jam session at the Touch of Madness in Observatory. Ndlala continues to push musical boundaries, currently working on material for his next album.

About the Album: Beira

Ndlala’s latest album, Beira, is a vibrant testament to his global musical influences and personal journey. Inspired by years of collaboration with musicians across Africa and beyond, the album blends Afro-fusion, jazz, and world music elements. Rather than adhering to traditional forms, Ndlala crafts each composition intuitively, resulting in music that is both innovative and heartfelt.

Beira is deeply personal, with each track dedicated to individuals who have shaped Ndlala’s life and music. Highlights include:

  1. Talina: A heartfelt tribute to his daughters, Talita and Ina.
  2. I Wouldn’t Have Made It Without You: A song of gratitude to a benefactor who supported him during the pandemic.
  3. Mbambi: An homage to legendary jazz pianist Bra Tete Mbambisa, celebrating his influence and musical legacy.
  4. Beira: A dedication to the people and culture of Beira, reflecting Ndlala’s appreciation for the city’s spirit.

The album’s sound is characterized by rich improvisation, diverse instrumentation, and a blend of global musical traditions, making Beira a compelling and original addition to contemporary world music.
