Wits Anglo American Digital Dome
ABOUT
The Planetarium at Wits University was completed in 1960 and is the largest in Africa. Generations of visitors have sat back, looked up, and been mesmerised by the wondrous celestial projections across the domed roof.
For its centenary celebrations, Wits University, backed by a significant donation from Anglo American, has re-imagined this beloved landmark as a cutting-edge digital facility, offering a 360° immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
Since reopening in 2024, the renamed Wits Anglo-American Digital Dome offers a variety of spectacular shows, and also serves as a teaching venue and research space where students and scientists can visualise the future.
The project was designed by Kate Otten Architects and it received the Herbert Prins Colosseum Award in 2024. The building was also awarded a Blue Plaque by the City of Johannesburg to commemorate its significance.
So, join your hosts Kathy Munro and Eric Itzkin for a fantastic tour that kicks off with the official unveiling of the Blue Plaque. This will be followed by an exclusive guided tour through the facility by architect Kate Otten. Finally, we will attend a Digital Dome show at 12.30.
The unveiling of the blue plaque will begin at 09.30 for 10.00. Parking is available in the Wits East Campus public parking area off Yale Road, right above the Digital Dome.
