Session 1 : CHECK MATE directed by Mashudu 'Mash' Malada
Mash is a visionary filmmaker known for crafting thought-provoking, visually stunning narratives that explore the human psyche. With a passion for storytelling that spans genres and mediums, Mash's work is characterized by its emotional depth, complex characters, and innovative cinematography.Mash developed a fascination with the world of cinema and storytelling at a young age. He spent countless hours studying the works of acclaimed directors, analyzing the ways in which they used visual and narrative elements to convey powerful messages. After honing his craft through various short films and projects such as Hotel Limbo, Mash made his short film debut with Uthuli - People Of The Dust which was nominated at the JHB 48hr film festival, it was then followed by "Checkmate," Winner of the Young Voices category at the JFF, a haunting and deeply personal exploration of mental health, self-doubt, and redemption.
Session 2 : What did you dream ? directed by Karabo Lediga
Karabo Lediga is a distinguished writer and director in television and film. Her short film, “What Did You Dream?”, premiered in competition at both the Clermont-Ferrand and Palm Springs International Short Film Festivals. She has written for Netflix’s first African Original series, “Queen Sono”, and contributed as a writer, director, and performer to the Emmy-nominated “Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola”. Her directorial work includes “The Bantu Hour” and “The Mayor”. Karabo’s writing credits feature the award-winning “Lockdown”, “MTV Shuga 5”, “Emoyeni: Insanguluko”, and the animated series “Queens” with Wild Sheep.

With "Checkmate," Mash delivers a powerful and deeply moving film that explores the darkest corners of the human experience. Through the protagonist's journey, Mash sheds light on the often-invisible struggles of mental health, and offers a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. As a director, Mash brings a unique perspective to this complex and timely subject matter, using the medium of film to create a sense of empathy and understanding in his audience. The film stars Peter the Cartoon.
What Did You Dream? :
It’s the summer school holidays in 1990 South Africa, and 11-year-old Boipelo returns to her grandmother Koko’s house in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. The country is on the brink of democracy, and Boipelo is about to attend a multiracial school, adding to her uncertainty. This holiday is different, marked by her grandfather’s violent coughing and ominous adult conversations. Amidst the usual chores and clashes with her cousins, Boipelo is troubled by her inability to remember her dreams, crucial for her granny’s local lottery, Fahfee. Determined to bring a smile to her grandmother’s face, she devises a plan to dream again and feel a sense of belonging before her life changes forever.
