Drummer, composer, Producer and electronic musician Moses Boyd is The London Born Winner of the MOBO Awards 2015 Best jazz act, The John Peel 'Play more Jazz Award’ from the 2016 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards. And the 2014 worshipful company of music young jazz musician of the year award.
Moses has worked and collaborated with the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith, Ed Motta, Little Simz, Four Tet, Floating Points, Sampha, Zara McFarlane, Gilles Peterson, and many more. Whilst leading his own outfits The Exodus and Solo Exodus which infuses Jazz, grime and electronica influences. Moses also releases music under his own label Exodus Records.
DJ Lag
History will remember DJ LAG as a pioneer who propelled the quintessentially Durban Gqom sound beyond the confines of the coastal city, straight into the capitals of the international electronic music industry.
At first listen, it might not appear that Gqom’s minimalist, bass-heavy sound would take Lwazi Asanda Gwala from Clermont township in Durban to commanding dancefloors in Europe and Asia. But DJ Lag’s superb production skills have played a big part in transforming a sub-genre of house – one that began by soundtracking taxi trips around Durban – to an enviably innovative participant in the global scene.
It’s a stunning rise for an artist just in his 20s. But, DJ Lag’s ready to put in the work required for longevity in a hard business. As he told OkayAfrica in 2016, “If you’re following your passion you don’t feel much pressure. I’m taking it one step at a time to see where it’s actually heading. So far it’s going proper and we’re just hoping for the best. We’re just working as a team with the rest of the gqom guys – we’re just working as a unit. I don’t feel much pressure – it’s not like I’m on top top top – I’m just on my way.”
KLEIN (UK)
South London based musician Klein is an artist who’s neoteric vision has seen her quickly become one of the UK’s most intriguing and unpinnable producers and performers. Her often playful and restive approach to composition is instantly alluring. Samples of obscure Nigerian B-Movies clatter into jagged beats. Distant piano loops lurk in the haze whilst beguiling vocals fade in and out of the sensory World she has created.
This year has seen the release of her debut album Only, self released online and then on heart shaped diamond USB stick by DIY label Howling Owl Records, and more recently the Lagata EP that has led her to be featured in Dazed and Confused, Wire, and i-D magazine; the latter of which premiered the beautiful Akinola Davies JR directed video for Marks Of Worship – a stunning five minutes piece of murky ambience dominated by a Whatsapp sermon sent from a Nigerian Aunt. You would expect nothing less from Klein.
Angel-Ho
South African musician Angel-Ho is an artist who profoundly understands this collective cultural unconscious, and how to manipulate it for their own ends. Through their recordings, image and performances they conduct the iconography of pop into transgressive realms. The Cape Town based producer has become an acclaimed global underground figure over the last year. With their brutal music and assertive non-binary queer image, Angelo Valerio was identified by many publications as making the perfect soundtrack to the tumult of Rhodes and Fees Must Fall. Their musical output is combined with intense live performances. Dancing on glass and a carefree attitude toward pyrotechnics.
Card On Spokes
The brainchild of Cape Town based jazz musician Shane Cooper, Card On Spokes is a live electronic music project that might best be described by one of his lyrics:
“the dance of things to come”.
Taking influence from hip hop to house music, and subtle colours from his jazz roots, he has crafted a unique style that is constantly evolving.
CoS has seen rapid success in the last few years, reaching a #1 on YFM, getting airplay on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 6, as well as support from Gilles Peterson, and Boiler Room debuts. His live performance on the Cape Town Allstars edition of Boiler Room in 2016 set the tone for his latest EP 'As We Surface' which dropped in September 2016 to critical acclaim.
As a live electronic act, CoS incorporates keys, electric bass, and controllers, often flexing out into psychedelic bass solo frontiers, atop a bed of heaving dancefloor-centric beats.
He has performed all over South Africa and abroad, and has shared the stage with
Little Dragon, Daedelus, Young Fathers, Clap! Clap! and more.
Shane Cooper is known as one of the most progressive young jazz artists and double bassists in South Africa, having won the SAMA (South African Music Award) in 2014 for Best Jazz Album, and performing and/or recording with artists like Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper), Nils Berg (The Stoner), Soweto Kinch, The Kyle Shepherd Trio, Skyjack, Talvin Singh (Bjork), Malcolm Braff (Blue Note), and more.
