ABOUT
Barbara and John played at my venue Slow Life in 2014 in Muizenberg to rapturous applause, come see them in Kalk BayTellinger & Fresk is a formidable meeting of the minds between South African songbird Barbora Tellinger, and American Grammy nominated pianist John Fresk.
BARBORA TELLINGER has been thrilling audiences since the days of No.58 in Hillbrow. She has performed in various parts of the world and provided training for music students and professionals for over two decades. Her career began in the protest theatre days of the 80s Black Sun and the Voelvry movement, and has seen collaborations with artists like Rashid Lanie, Lionel Bastos, Robin Auld, Thandi Klaasen, Abigail Kubeka, Johannes Kerkorrel, and support act for Meatloaf. Until recently she was the jazz vocal and ensemble lecturer at the University of Pretoria for almost 10 years.
JOHN FRESK was educated at North Texas University and is a Grammy nominated jazz pianist who has worked with the likes of Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea. Arguably one of the most skilled and prolific pianists in South Africa, he excels at every genre, from Richard Cock's symphony orchestra to the Orbit's Funk Band. Together they have audiences swooning, from Cape Town to Prague, with their beautiful music taken from the Great American Songbook of jazz. Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael are always well represented. It really don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!
In 2016 they toured Europe, where there most notable performance was to a sellout crowd in The Reduta in Prague, one of Europe’s oldest and most famous jazz clubs. They will be touring Europe again in 2018 where they will again be collaborating with some of the continent’s most established jazz musicians. Their most recent local performance was at the historic Glenshiel residence in Westcliffe where they played four encores and sold out of CDs. This was followed by a memorable collaboration with Joshua Na Die Reen, one of Barbora’s previous students and now good friend and colleague. They are currently in pre-production for a studio album and are about to embark on a tour of the western Cape!!
