Step into history and embrace the spirit of Soweto with the 16 on 16 Hike, a unique series of urban hikes commemorating the pivotal events of June 16, 1976. Over three days, immerse yourself in Soweto's vibrant culture, rich history, and resilient community. Retrace the historic march of the Soweto Uprising, visiting key landmarks and meeting points of that fateful day. As we re-march, we step into the now and future of Soweto, inspired by the aspirations of the Soweto Uprising.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
On June 16, 1976, approximately 20,000 students in Soweto protested against the imposition of Afrikaans in schools. The police responded with brutal force, resulting in many deaths, including Hector Pieterson. This event marked a significant turning point in the struggle against apartheid.
HIKE DETAILS
Day 1: 14th June 2025 - 6km
"Gathering of the Brave"
Start at a historic location where students first gathered. Engage with Hiking Soweto guides as you explore the origins of the uprising.
Day 2: 15th June 2025 - 10km
"Rallying for Rights"
Touch base at a key rallying point. Discover vibrant streets, the art, and historic sites with the guidance of Hiking Soweto experts.
Day 3: 16th June 2025 - 16km
"March to Freedom"
As we conclude this series of iconic trail, we will visit other significant sites of the Soweto Uprising. Reflect on the journey and the legacy of those who fought for freedom, guided by Hiking Soweto.
