ABOUT
This concert brings Jonathan Crossley (Liverpool), Carlo Mombelli (Johannesburg) and Jonno Sweetman (Cape Town) together again for a unique performance of new sketches and free improvisations, before they head into the studio to lay down new material.
The trio last performed in Johannesburg in November 2023, as part of the ‘New World Music Days’ festival and released their last EP, ‘Bree Street’. This saw the trio joined by Slovak guitar legend David Kollar and Johannesburg’s Marcus Wyatt on horn.
In 2022, they released the album ‘Inhale’: All About Jazz wrote: ‘a merrily schizophrenic assault that sounds almost like The Bad Plus with guitars, it works with what sounds like quantum rhythms, gleefully toyed with by the here superlative Sweetman, who chews up the scenery, and that ‘Mombelli’s sinuous bass slinks into the moonlight with his instantly recognisable sound.’
Texx and the City said ‘the album is refreshing and relevant in its adaptive, explorative – yet quite deliberate and considered–nature.’
At this show, Mombelli’s bass and Sweetman’s drums will accompany Crossley’s work on extended guitar; Crossley’s guitar extends beyond common use, into glitch, generative patching, live sampling, and augmented control systems, leading Guitar Moderne to dub him ‘the poster boy for modern guitar.’
