The Story Behind Moms House For Children

Theresa Vigarino’s life was profoundly shaped by her mother, who was orphaned at an early age. This experience instilled in Theresa a deep sense of empathy and a lifelong commitment to supporting vulnerable children. As the Founder and Executive Director of Moms House For Children, Theresa has always possessed an innate compassion for those suffering—especially children—and made a personal vow early in life to dedicate herself to being a helper for the world’s most vulnerable.

By the age of eight, Theresa felt a calling to work in Africa. The realization that children were starving resonated deeply with her, igniting an altruistic passion that never wavered. Before her mother passed, Theresa reflected on her childhood vow—a solemn promise to serve children in need. That vision remained constant: it was always Africa. Love the Children, Unite the World.

The dream stayed with Theresa into adulthood. After raising her own two children, a series of serendipitous events began to align, pointing her toward the fulfillment of her life’s mission. In 2005, she met Lotus Khoza—the man who would become the Regional Director and her closest collaborator in the field. After just eight hours together, Theresa knew their meeting was destined. Following a visit to the villages of Mpumalanga and meeting the children firsthand, she made another vow: she would return.

Fifteen years later, after extensive research and unwavering determination, Theresa and Lotus reconnected. They pledged to work together to improve the lives of children across South Africa and beyond. In 2020, Moms House For Children was officially launched in South Africa and began providing food to 6 villages in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. In 2021, MHFC facilitated a clean water project, clean sanitation, and a sustainable farming project, while still providing essential needs.

With over two decades of social development experience, Lotus began implementing foundational programs in Mpumalanga. Meanwhile, Theresa focused on establishing the organization in the United States—building the infrastructure, assembling a global team, and ensuring sustainable processes.

In 2023, on a trip working in the field, Theresa heard a song that inevitably led to a magical moment in her life. She was moved so incredibly deeply when she heard it, that it penetrated her heart and soul. After months of hearing this song that followed her everywhere she went, she was led by the Spirit to discover the origins. After a strong internal pulling, she found a way to contact Zakes Bantwini. Once she discovered “Osama”, she listened to every song she could find, day after day. At the time when she came in contact with his management team, she wasn’t aware he was the grammy award winning artist and humanitarian. A profound connection and friendship grew quickly, naturally and profoundly. With similar giving hearts, they have found their way to work together for the good of the children.

The Team

Lotus, based in Mpumalanga, oversees daily operations, ensuring grassroots involvement, accountability, transparency, and robust data collection to measure impact. Her leadership has been instrumental in guiding community-led programs that address the urgent needs of orphaned and vulnerable children. With 25 years of social development experience with Africa Foundation facilitating and overseeing 1,500 projects and programs, Moms House For Children has been given the incredible opportunity to include Lotus Khoza as the Regional Director for Africa. Since 2020, MHFC has developed local teams and members in Johannesburg.

Currently, MHFC has built a strong team in Cape Town spearheaded by Sindy Dondolo who has worked with NGO’s, National Government special purpose vehicles, NEPAD, Africa50, Africa Investor, Afrikaburn Creative Projects and Burning Man (USA) promoting diversity, investment into Africa’s development, art and cultural development..

The Vision

While the vision of Moms House For Children extends globally, its mission begins in Africa—specifically in the rural regions of Mpumalanga. The organization is committed to raising awareness in the U.S. and beyond about the critical needs of these communities. With strategic development, strong leadership, and community partnerships, MHFC is preparing to build a Dream Center, scale existing programs, and expand into neighboring villages already identified for future support.

Current programs—led by Lotus and Portia Khoza, a member of the Board of Directors for Moms House For Children Africa—are thriving. Living in the region allows them to oversee all projects directly, ensuring accurate distribution of resources, financial transparency, and measurable outcomes for children, caregivers, and the wider community.

The villages supported by Moms House For Children have become an extended family. This community now includes passionate supporters from across the globe. Beyond providing essential services and development programs, MHFC is committed to amplifying awareness of the suffering and urgency facing vulnerable children in South Africa and other underserved regions.

The organization has grown significantly thanks to its clear mission, global support, and the love that drives every initiative. A core part of the vision is to inspire individuals with resources, ideas, or a desire to give back—encouraging them to join this movement. By empowering local leaders and ensuring that fundamental needs are met, Moms House For Children stands as a beacon of hope and sustainable impact.

Our motto is simple yet powerful: Love the Children and Unite the World.
