ABOUT
An Ongoing Rehearsal continues with its third movement, conceived by renowned pianist, improvisor, and scholar Nduduzo Makhathini. This ever-evolving performance space is more than a concert - it is a ritual of reflection and rupture, a sonic meditation on the fugitive nature of Black aesthetic practices.
Rooted in the philosophy of improvisation, An Ongoing Rehearsal is not about perfection or closure - it is about motion, process, and the ephemeral beauty of sound in search of itself. It invites both artist and listener into a modality of surrender, a space where expression is fluid, transient, and transformative.
In this movement, Makhathini is joined by Maestro Mbuso Khoza - a venerated vocalist, composer, and cultural historian whose voice carries the ancestral weight of isiZulu storytelling, and whose sound straddles the sacred and the contemporary.
This performance will also mark a special celebration of Nduduzo Makhathini’s landmark collaboration with DJ Black Coffee at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival - a moment that signalled a powerful intersection of experimental jazz and global house culture, further amplifying the reach of South African sound on the world stage.
Together, Makhathini and Khoza converge in a moment that transcends genre; where amahubo, jazz, improvisation, and spiritual inquiry are interwoven into a performance that is at once an offering, a questioning, and a becoming.
