ABOUT

Fashion Revolution South Africa, in partnership with the African Fashion Research Institute (AFRI)* and Khensani Mohlatlole, invite you to join us for an immersive experience as part of Fashion Revolution Week 2025, on Saturday, 26 April at the AFRI Lab Pop-Up at Museum Africa. This hands-on workshop focuses on African fashion history through upcycling and indigenous sewing techniques.

Arrive between 9:30-10:00 to check in before we begin with an exclusive 30-minute guided walkabout of the Fashion Accounts exhibition, led by co-curator Dr. Erica de Greef. This curated tour will set the stage for the creative session that follows.

The upcycling workshop will be led by fibre artist and researcher, Khensani Mohlatlole, who will introduce you to indigenous sewing techniques and guide you in transforming your chosen garment. The upcycling workshop will start at 10:30, after the museum walkabout, and will wrap up by 15:30. All additional materials and sewing equipment will be provided**, so you will just need to bring a garment with you that you would like to upcycle.

We'll take a short lunch break, so be sure to bring some food with you as well.

*AFRI Members receive a 50% discount on AFRI Lab collaborations, workshops, talks and film screenings. Sign up now for your AFRI Lab membership at R130.00 for April and become part of a growing community.

**You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine and tools if you have any. If you plan on bringing some of your own equipment, please send an email to [email protected] with the equipment you plan on bringing, so we can account for it in our resourcing for the day.
