Sophiatown - The Musical

Wed Aug 2, 19:00 - Sat Aug 5, 21:30

The Kent Hall, Pinelands High School

ABOUT

The musical is set in the 1950s, during the implementation of the apartheid government's Group Areas Act and the forced removals to Meadowlands. Sophiatown takes place in a freehold home owned by Mamariti. Divided by the chalk marks on the floor, this single room structure, and sometimes shebeen, holds the lives of seven characters who are responsible for the action of the play. Mingus, an infamous American gangster, his cherrie, Lulu, nicknamed Princess, Charlie the sidekick, Fafie, an ear to the ground, Jakes, a reporter at Drum Magazine and Ruth Golding, a Jewish girl from Yeoville complete the list of characters that the play focuses on.

Resonating with Jazz and politics, Sophiatown highlights the different political perspectives of these characters. It exposes the resistance, ignorance, betrayal and musical undercurrent of all that was Kofif.  Sophiatown is reminiscent of the strength and bravery of the everyday heroes who, in some cases, sacrificed everything for liberation. Embracing American Jazz, tsotsi taal and the embers that lie beneath our history, Sophiatown captures the perfect essence of ‘Ons dak nie, ons phola Hier’… ‘We won’t move’.
