ABOUT
The performance opens with a few songs using the Zulu umakhweyana musical bow. One by one, the ensemble members join the stage and launch an introductory piece featuring acoustic bass phrases and free-form lines, accompanied by drumming and percussive drones.
Sparse beats on a piccolo axatse bell and mid-blown bamboo flute leads to a slow, guitar-led minor blues section with brief solo exchanges between strings and saxophone. This section transitions into a suite with three simple compositional ideas involving melodic lines and their harmonic complements.
The rest of the first and second sets will feature various arrangements of original jazz-influenced tunes, including instrumental solos from the ensemble. Each set will also showcase a performance demonstration using either the umqangala or isithontolo isiqomqomana mouth bows or reed-flute.
