MORE INFO ON THE BANDS:

Was Daar

Was Daar is an eclectic band born from the rich tapestry of its members' diverse backgrounds. Comprising the talents of renowned photographer Guy Tillim, acclaimed dancer Hannah Lowenthal, and celebrated author Rian Malan, this group brings an unmatched fusion of creativity to their performances. Originally known as the Vermaaklikheid Bakery Orchestra, their journey began in a remote village where bread-making turned to music.

Guy Tillim, with a prestigious career in photography, and Hannah Lowenthal, a master of movement and dance, bring their unique artistry to the mix. Rian Malan, known for his literary contributions and cultural explorations, adds depth to their ensemble. Together, they traverse obscure folk genres, from American country-western to Argentinian tango, with local vastrap and JewGypsy tunes enriching their sound.

Recent performances in places such as Barrydale and Stilbaai have set the stage for their aspirations to entertain at weddings, bar mitzvahs, and beyond. Was Daar stands ready to enchant with their blend of history, music, and storytelling, playing with passion and artistry that defy conventional boundaries.

Dax Butler

Dax Butler is a seasoned South African songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music career spans decades. Born in Alberton during the rock and roll and soul music explosion of the late 50s and 60s, he honed his craft in the early 70s across the UK, Tennessee, and California. His songwriting reflects a life rich with experiences, touching on themes from global warming to personal anecdotes, all delivered with a sardonic twist. Known for his gritty country and blues with a touch of humour, Dax is accompanied by Daniel Zachariah Franks on violin and double bass, and Simon Annett on drums. His live performances promise a blend of original storytelling and soul-stirring music, available on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and Bandcamp. With bootleg cassettes offered for die-hard fans, Dax ensures every show is an unforgettable sonic adventure.

The Porchlights

The Porchlights have been around for years a unique blend of dark, sardonic country infused with foot-stomping energy. Known for their eclectic covers ranging from Hank Williams to Dolly Parton, they infuse their performances with a whisky-soaked charm and a hint of existential dread. Featuring Glen Wolter, his daughter Zoe, Daniel Zachariah Franks, and Terrence Scarr, this four-piece band captivates with smooth and raw melodies reminiscent of a moonshine shot. They haunt bars, markets, and festivals, igniting each venue with their reckless charm and heartfelt storytelling. Catch them live to experience music that hits straight from the heart, promising an earful of acoustic grit and vibrant folk.
