The Chairman
ABOUT
A spellbinding experience of music, poetry, and spoken word, as the ever-enigmatic Pilani Bubu graces the stage with a repertoire drawn from her critically acclaimed albums:
Folklore Chapter 1 – A nostalgic suite of African folk tales.
Folklore Chapter 2: Ekuseni – A deeply personal exploration of ancestral wisdom and African spirituality.
Nay’Indaba – A bold sonic odyssey reflecting on South Africa’s history and 30 years of freedom through the lens of powerful women.
On the Bandstand:
Solomon Willy – Guitar
Sean Sanby – Bass
Sbu Zondi – Drums
Sibusiso Shabalala – Saxophone
Nay’Indaba, Pilani’s latest offering, is a ferocious and psychedelic meditation on South Africa’s past and present, weaving jazz, spoken word, and African rhythms into a powerful narrative. In collaboration with the French trans-oriental jazz-rock band Marthe, this album is a rich tapestry of sound and storytelling.
As the founder of the Folklore Community, Pilani introduces this year’s Folklore Festival theme:
KINFOLK | Our 2025 Manifesto
In the delicate synchronicities of human connection, we find our #KINFOLK not merely through bloodlines, but through the resonant frequencies of shared understanding. Kindred spirits emerge like starlight through the darkness, drawn together by an ineffable recognition of mutual truth. We gather in sacred spaces to weave together our cultural inheritances & gifts—like tributary streams joining a mighty river, watering our collective consciousness.
Special Feature
This unforgettable evening will also include a special guest performance by South African music legend Madala Kunene. A master of Zulu blues and an icon in his own right, Madala will grace the stage in celebration of his birthday, making this gathering even more meaningful and momentous.
