ABOUT

Developing solid calculation strategies depends on the understanding and correct interpretation of the concepts and skills embedded in Numbers, Operations and Relationships.
During this session the four calculation strategies of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division will be considered for the relevant learning phase and a number of useful resources will be explained during the session.

  • Mathematics Teachers (Grades 1 – 3)
  • HOD’s
  • Principals
  • Subject advisors
  • Provincial and National subject advisors of Mathematics
  • Parents with learners in Grades 1 – 3
  • Everybody that is serious about teaching Mathematics

  • Certificate of attendance. Participants could use this to claim SACE Type 1 PD points (Teacher Initiated) for attending an educational workshop session.
Tea/coffee will be served on arrival.

The following topics will be covered in this session:

Teaching Foundation Phase addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies.
For each strategy the following aspects will be considered:
  • Overview of the strategy
  • Short definition
  • Example in general – hands on activity
  • Examples per grade
  • Resources
  • Misconceptions
  • Bloom’s taxonomy questions/assessment
  • Questions/answers to/from participants on the strategy.

PRESENTER
Liezel Blom, has been an educator with a special focus on Mathematics for over 23 years. Co-founder of SATeacher. Most published Mathematics author in South Africa, with more than 500 titles. Main author of the DBE Workbooks. She has to date trained more than 20 000 educators, from the most rural public schools to the most sophisticated private schools in South Africa. Her hands-on and practical approach makes her a highly sought after facilitator in South Africa. All techniques and methodology shared in her sessions are based on internationally researched best practice, aiming to be practical and easy to apply and to really make a difference in the understanding of Mathematics by teachers and learners alike.
