On Saturday 1 March 2015, the Afrikan Freedom Station (Sophiatown, JHB) presents a rare reunion performance of the Roots Grown Deep world music ensemble, as they honour 12 years of working together across Southern Africa and celebrate the release of their album ”Musical Ecology 1”.


This once-off mini-festival will feature an afternoon programme of restorative workshops, and an evening concert featuring some of the collective’s most celebrated and members: 


Naftali – voice, harmonica

Ntando Mbatha – bass

Nkoto Malebye – voice

Stompie Selibe – winds & percussion, visual arts

Joel Karabo Elliott – voice, winds, strings

Gontse Makhene – percussion

Dennias Mashegwane – song, direto


The program for the afternoon is a casual summit-style interaction to engage the intellect and the heart on matters of regenerative life, roots and culture, and the ways in which our remnant human community can thrive in the age of . Seasoned professionals and youth leaders from various vocations will circle to discuss and question the theme: “Shaping of Regenerative Spaces for Creative Culture, Healing & CommUnity in the Age of Natural Disaster”. Among those present to contribute and guide the discussion include: Shorai Kaseke (Architecture), Keamo Rakgoadi (Youth Activism through Agro-Ecology), Steve Kwena Mokwena (Jazz & the Art of Renewal) and more to be announced.


Also part of the schedule for the afternoon programme will be a vocal empowerment workshop and communal song circle led by the extraordinary singers in the ensemble, particularly the world class vocalists Nkoto Malebye and Naftali of the Royal Family.
