Union High School is thrilled to announce a once-in-a-lifetime fundraising event that promises to create lasting memories for all participants.


Join us for an 8.8km journey beneath the glowing light of the waxing moon, as we traverse the stunning landscapes of the Camdeboo National Park.


Imagine walking amidst the serene beauty of nature, all while bathed in the gentle glow of the full moon. This is more than just a hike; it’s an invitation to connect with the remarkable flora and fauna that fills our beloved park. The Valley of Desolation, famous for its impressive cliffs and panoramic views, provides the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable night.


Saturday, April 12 

17:30 at the Valley of Desolation Gate 

Participants will be transported to the starting point at the Valley of Desolation for ease and convenience.


Join us for this extraordinary evening for just: 

R100 for those under 18 years 

R150 for adults


The Full Moon Walk is not only a chance to soak in the but also an opportunity to foster a sense of community. Bring along friends and family to share in this magical experience!

EVENT LOGISTICS:


All participants, drivers and marshals are to fill in the SANPARKS indemnity and registration form online or with Mrs Moos. Entries will close on Thursday 10 April.


REGISTRATION: 5PM at the park gates leading to the Valley of Desolation. on the Murraysburg Road.


Those who need a lift on the buses should indicate so beforehand and board buses at gate at 5.30pm. 


Park your vehicles carefully at the gates OUTSIDE the park where you can board them afterwards. Please try to share lifts to and from the park gate as parking is limited. The buses will not transport people to town afterwards.


Private vehicles will also be permitted to transport participants to the top of the valley but MUST also meet at the park gate at 5.30pm to travel in convoy with the buses.   Private vehicles to collect RED TICKET at registration. Those driving private vehicles will not be able to walk but should drop participants at the top and then drive down in convoy where you can wait at the bottom with a picnic if you wish.


Only one driver is permitted per vehicle and must also fill in the indemnity form.

BUSES AND PRIVATE VEHICLES WILL LEAVE THE SANPARKS GATE IN CONVOY BETWEEN 5.45 AND 6PM. NO LATECOMERS WILL BE PERMITTED TO DRIVE UP AFTERWARDS.


Once bus drivers and private drop-off drivers have dropped off participants, they are to drive down from the valley SLOWY with lights on.  EXPECT to come across an oncoming vehicle at all times. Travel with caution.


Non-participants and drivers may bring a picnic and lighting and wait for participants on the park road at the gates at the bottom of the pass. Please do not litter. No fires please. Relax and enjoy the full moon from the comfort of your deckchairs. You may sit on the park side of the gate which will be open. No one to drive towards the valley. Please take all your litter home with you.


The walk will begin as soon as last private vehicle has left the parking lot at the top of the valley, around 19h00.  No one is to leave early. The sun will set at 18.04 so it will be dark up there. Bring torches. Moon will rise at 17h58.


Please note: 

The walk is 8km long. It is not a race. There is no prize-giving. The prize is the walk!

Due to litter issues there will be NO water or refreshment points. Please ensure that you have a bottle of water WHICH YOU CARRY OUT WITH YOU for the walk.

Head torches are advisable, but the moon will be bright.


Wear light, visible clothing.


Keep on the road.

Look up!  It should be beautiful! Be mindful that there might be buck, owls and other nocturnal animals. Follow the park rules: no music, no litter, no dogs.

Enjoy the privilege of walking in the peace and quiet of a National park under the moon.

One bus will drive behind the last walker/s to ensure that no one is left behind or to collect anyone who might be injured.

Feel free to leave once you have completed the walk. 

Should the weather be inclement and raining, the walk will be canceled and participants refunded. There will be no refunds if the walk is not canceled.
