See, touch, and taste heritage apple and pear varieties that are no longer in commercial production at the annual Tru-Cape Heritage Orchard Walkabout. These varieties are being saved for future generations in the Tru-Cape Heritage Orchard on Oak Valley Estate in Elgin.
Each year, Tru-Cape opens this special orchard for two guided walks to showcase varieties such as the Kroonappel, Northern Spy, Pomme de Neige and many others. This year's event takes place on March 1, 2025 at 10h00 and 14h00.
“Although the orchard visits are free of charge we have to limit the number of people and so tickets have to be booked at Quicket and shown at the gate,” Buks Nel, variety specialist, says.
The tour is hosted by Buks and Tru-Cape’s Quality Assurance Manager, Henk Griessel. Henk and Buks co-authored books on historic apple varietals, “Apples in the early days at the Cape”,"The Newcomers", and "People, Pears and the stories they share" available for purchase at the open days and from Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing.
Please note that no seating, bathroom or refreshment facilities will be available in the orchard and people should consider sensible walking shoes and be sure to have appropriate weather and sun protection.
